Three weeks ago D knew his colors really well. His favorites were blue and red. He would ask for blue Gatorade or blue juice all the time and I would give it to him and everything would be fine.
Not so much anymore.
Now he seems to have his blues and reds a little mixed up. He asks for blue Gatorade, I give it to him and there is a huge meltdown because to him its red, its not the blue Gatorade he's asked for. We have arguments over the fact that its blue, not red. I've tried and tried to reason with him. I've pointed out things that are blue and things that are red. And every time I am met with, "no mommy, that is red/blue (whichever is not the color I just pointed to)" He asks for a red fork at dinner, I give him a red fork, he cries and says "not the blue fork, D wants the red fork" We have all tried to reason with him to no avail.
All the other colors? Yellow is still yellow. Green is still green. Orange is still orange... etc... But red is blue and blue is red.
I have racked my brain trying to figure out how this has happened. The only thing I can think of is that a few weeks ago we were in the Dr's office, and there was this wheel toy thing that had a red cat and a blue dog on it. D says to me "blue cat." And I said "no honey, it's a blue dog." Until this point he had also known a dog from a cat. I thought maybe it was a bad rendering of a cat and a dog, but nope, they both looked like what they were supposed to look like.
Where the flaw lies? With the toymaker. Any toymaker who knows anything about Clifford the Big RED Dog would simply not chose any other color to make a dog. I am convinced that this is what has my son confused about his colors now. I hold every argument with my three year old son about blue and red against this toy company.
I just hope he can be convinced before he reaches kindergarten.
PS: I went to see if I could find a picture of this toy, or who the toymaker was... googling "dog cat wheel" comes up with pet strollers! Yep, that's right you can now buy an all terrain covered stroller for your cat or dog!

Is it Blue or Red?

I've learned after going through the same thing w/ 3 hard headed boys that it's not worth fighting w/ them. They'll eventually realize that what they're saying was wrong and mom was right. Just agree and eventually D will figure it out. Less headaches for everyone!!!
I'm sure he'll get himself switched around to the way that it is soon enough. I'm sure that it's frustrating that you are listening to him and yet you are not getting it "right" in his eye. Sounds like a frustrating situation for all involved.
Hilarious! You can't convince them of anything, even 3 year olds think they have all the answers!
Ugh, my daughter does this with a few things too. Drives me bonkers. Hope he gets it switched around in no time!
My Izzy is pretty good with her colors with one exception...She gets black and white confused. Always! It's kinda funny but we hope she catches on soon.
I'm more fixated on the pet strollers because the big joke with us (before Mateo, that is), was buying one of those pet strollers to wheel the cats around the condo complex. This was entirely a joke, though (or was it???). Because those strollers are so silly, it's nuts. And I've seen people with them around here.
I'm sure D will get himself all figured out. Something else will come along and his blue/red switch will flip back. ; )
I think its all a big PBS plot
Oh yes. I know the value of picking your battles. Though I don't always choose wisely. ;)
Thanks for stopping at my blog. I truly appreciate it! :)
I can remember going through the same thing with Punky. Recently he started substituting "f"s for "b"s. For example, he would say "faloon" instead of "balloon." It is really weird. I think he is just being lazy- but I am still working on it with him. He can say it, but just chooses not to.
I am not sure what it is with blue and red... My son just turned 2 and is learning some colors. Some days he knows red and blue great but then other he gets them backwards.... strange!!
It's hard to reason with them at that age. I'm sure he'll get it sorted out by Kindergarten, after that you can let his teacher argue the point. ;-) Thanks for stopping by.
